More About Jesus

Holy ONE (of God, of Israel)

Peter writes in 2 Peter 3:18

… grow in the … knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (grow in your knowledge about Jesus, grow in your experience of Jesus and grow in your relationship with Jesus)

-if you want to grow as a Christian, if you want to mature and grow up then learn about Jesus, experience Jesus, more and more, in your life and develop your relationship with Jesus, deeper and deeper.

More about Jesus would I know.

So, lets experience one scene with Jesus along with the apostles, other Jewish people and with demons. That’s right, demons experienced meeting Jesus and what happened tells us and shows us something about Jesus that should cause us to revere Him, to even fear Him with holy fear and to venerate Him with astonishment, wonderment and amazement.

Do you want to find out about this Jesus, do you want to experience this Jesus? If you do, then you will grow in your relationship with Him and like Moses, when he met God at the burning bush, you’ll take your shoes off because you’ll be standing on Holy Ground.

Here’s the Jesus experience scene from Mark 1 and Luke 4.

-come with me into the Gospel account, enter the scene as if you are there, please come with me and together lets experience this Jesus

We are at the sea of Galilee, Jesus is walking on it’s shore and He sees fishermen, He calls out to Peter and Andrew and to James and John -follow me. they left their nets and followed Jesus, and they walked to Capernaum, which is on the north/west part of the sea.

There they entered the Capernaum Synagogue, it was the Sabbath and Jesus began to teach there. What happened there, in the Synagogue, flabbergasted all present as they experienced Jesus for the first time.

Are you there now in the temple, watching Jesus. Here’s the account from Luke’s Gospel (chapter 4).

31 Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath, he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. 36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.

(repeat) a man possessed by a demon, yelled out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? … I know who you are—you are the Holy One of God!”

WHO IS JESUS …He is the Holy One of God… Everyone, please now, experience Holy Jesus, see Him there and hear the words of that Jesus speaks, words of comfort and conviction, truth burning in our hearts. Feel the tenseness in the room at encountering the Holy One. The demon screamed, it took people’s breath away, they hardly knew what to say except -what! Who! Demons know!

Jesus is Holy and Jesus is the ONE -the Holy One

-you know what Holy means, don’t you?

- I think in our spirits we know what holy means, when we think of a holy God we drift into a deep reverence because God is different from us (set apart from us), compare yourself to God and see for yourself.

  • He is perfect in every way, pure in word, action and thoughts.
  • He is sinless, absolutely innocent in every way, in the past, present & in the future -He will continue as He was so shall He be tomorrow.
  • He never did anything wrong, said anything wrong, thought anything wrong, no evil intention or motive -ever.
  • This is the Jesus you face now in the synagogue.

You see, God is by nature Holy, we are not naturally holy we are being made Holy by Him -big, big difference🡪we are not God………..

-believers and followers of Jesus Christ, we are being made holy, we are being made perfect, we are being sanctified, and we are being set apart.

Only God is holy by nature and we are not.

So, back to the demon possessed man sitting in the synagogue along with the rest of us. We’re listening to Jesus speak we are hearing His words, we are hearing His voice speak such words of truth that we are amazed at His authority and power but alas, His words of *God truth* cut deep into our very souls.

-as we sit there in that still but electrically charged room, a man can’t take the tension anymore, he’s demon possessed, he has an unclean spirit in him, the truth spoken is unbearable and the One speaking, Jesus, is someone he knows from the heavenly realms, from the other side.

-now before you separate yourself from this man and say -oh well, he’s demon possessed and I am so much better than him, please realize that we have a lot in common with this impure spirited man than we may feel comfortable with.

By nature, he was unholy-so are we

He was a sinner-so are we

His sin would be judged and paid forso will ours

Jesus was there and Jesus can helpditto for us praise God

In my mind’s eye, I see this scene. Part way through Jesus’s teaching this demon crazed man, unable to contain himself, jumps to his feet, it startles everyone, he screams out as loud as he can, that scares everyone, and what he screamed out gives everyone Holy terror.

He said “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

-I can’t stand your holy presence, leave us Jesus, are you judging us now, you are the HOLY ONE!!

The Holy One of God, a name of Jesus, a title and description of Him, a position He held, a prophecy come true, and in the flesh standing and speaking before us.

I surmise only 2 people in this synagogue room, knew this fact, that Jesus was the Holy One, the demon possessed man and Jesus Himself.

Mary, Jesus’s mother knew 30 years prior to this scene, she was told.

In Luke 1:35

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

Yes, the manger Jesus was the Holy One, the Son of God, Diety.

I also imagine as Peter, Andrew, James and John sat there, they hadn’t encountered that Holy One, Jesus, yet, but they soon would.

Indeed, Peter confesses this this very fact later when they had returned to this very same synagogue in Capernaum: John 6:68 -

Simon Peter answered Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Q as you sit there in the synagogue, watching, hearing, sensing, is the Jesus you see there, as you look upon Him, do you experience the fact that you are in His presence, this is the Holy One, this is the only Son of God, this is Emmanuel, this is our God, your God?

Q how should we react to Holiness, to the Holy One? When we encounter this Jesus, this Holy One, what do we experience?

The OT uses the terms the Holy One of Israel, the Holy One of Judah or just the term ‘the Holy One’, 31x. 26 x in Isaiah alone. I believe the ‘Holy One’ spoken of in the OT is the ‘Holy One’ of the NT, Jesus Christ the Lord. Here are 5 of those verses and I want you to catch all the associated words with ‘Holy One’.

Isaiah 43:3For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;

Isaiah 5:24Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 17:7In that day people will look to their Maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 30:15This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation,

Isaiah 47:4Our Redeemerthe Lord Almighty is his name— is the Holy One of Israel.

This is Jesus, the Holy One, your Redeemer, your Saviour, God Almighty, Sovereign, your Maker, the LORD your God.

THEEHOLYONE !!!

Q So, now, how should we react to the Holy One? When we encounter this Jesus, this Holy One, what do we experience? As we enter this scene in the Capernaum Synagogue and the demonized man is screaming out His name and title, Holy One, do we realize maybe for the first time that this is THEE HOLY ONE, our God has come?

There seems to be a common and uniform reaction in the Bible for those who realize they have entered into God’s presence, into Holiness space, into the presence of the Holy One.

John the Apostle sees Jesus, the Holy One, and faints as though dead.

This is your Jesus, your Holy One, Now, how do see Jesus, how do you react. My emotions and senses surge, I am overwhelmed -this is Jesus, my God the Holy one.

Isaiah in the presence of holiness is completely undone.

I, too, react to my own sinfulness, like Isaiah, I am undone. This is my loving Saviour who died for me -this is Jesus, my God the Holy one.

Habakkuk sees God, in chapter 3, whom he calls the Holy one. Habakkuk sees the power of God, the glory of God, lightening from God’s hand and hears the Divine thunder and he writes:

16 I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound;decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled.

This is your Jesus, your Holy One and my heart pounds.

Finally, Job sees the Holy one and sees his sinfulness and declares; ‘I abhor myself, I repent in dust & ashes, I will speak no more, I will put my hand over my mouth.

The reaction of John, Isaiah, Habakkuk and Job to the Holy One was to see themselves as sinners and to see God as ‘separated’ from them, Holy and they were unworthy.

-The man with the evil spirit screamed out leave us alone Jesus.

Jesus refused because His holiness did not preclude Him loving that man. Jesus delivered him of all his demons.

THIS IS YOUR JESUS, you too can experience deliverance.

-to the fainted John, The Holy One lifted Him up to his feet and showed what was to come on earth and a glimpse of heaven.

THIS IS YOUR JESUS, you too can experience the hope of heaven.

-to the undone Isaiah, He purified him and gave him a purpose in life.

THIS IS YOUR JESUS, you too can experience cleansing and the grand purpose of living for Jesus.

- to Habakkuk, at the end of his fear of God, joy and praise came to his lips.

-as to did Job, his lips declared that his Redeemer lives and he will see Him.

This is the Holy One to be seen, to be heard, to be experienced, Today.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty.

Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, Yahweh, El Shaddai.

Take your shoes off before Jesus, you’re standing on Holy Ground.
