YHWH Goayli (Go why ee lee^) God my Redeemer

(illus)

One popular show on TV is Pawn Stars featuring Rick Harrison, his son Corey and their side kick, Chumlee. They go about buying things that people bring into their store but they also are pawnbrokers. People pawn all sorts of things and here are some of the most popular things to pawn: Guns, tools, electronics, antiques and smartphones.

If I were to pawn my wedding ring, they would evaluate it’s worth, offer me 25-60% of its value in the form of a loan. If I agreed, they would give me the loan money and a pawn ticket. And store the ring in the back room.

There are 4 pawnshops in Peterborough, 1st Stop Swap Shop, Hock Shop Canada, Chumleighs and James Gold and Silver Buyers all on George Street.

I could go back any time, within 30 days - the redemption period, and present the ticket, repay the loan and the interest accrued and get my ring back. I would redeem my ring. I am the redeemer, the original owner.

One of the names God calls Himself is YHWH GOAYLI (Go why ee lee^)

GOD REDEEMER

-you will notice the ‘I’ at the end of Goayli denotes personal or MY which is the Hebrew word used by God’s people to describe their God

GOD MY REDEEMER       YHWH GOAYLI (Go why ee lee^)

YHWH, the God who is, who exists, who lives and who can be known. God can be known by you, personally, more intimately and more deeply as you live day by day. Here is a personal name of God which is critical, crucial and vital to you personally for without it, God Redeemer, life is hopeless and desperate. Let’s look into this word, Redeemer, and deepen our God experience and knowledge of the great I AM, YHWH

The word redeemer does not appear in the New Testament, only the word redeem.

In the Old Testament it appears 26x mainly in Ruth and Isaiah but also in Job, Psalms and Jeremiah.

The Redeemer concept in the OT is much deeper than a Pawn Shop although I can correlate a pawn shop and myself as this;

(Poem by GM)

I, pawned myself through sin to Satan

And to his lowly hell

I had no hope within for sure,

As no payment could make me well

No way to redeem my long, lost soul

Or to make me free again.

Then Jesus came with ticket and price

And ample interest did He pay

Redeemed me all, full and free

And paid the debt for me

The singular Hebrew word for redeem is ‘gaal’ or ‘goel’ and it means to redeem, to free, to buy back and even means to avenge.

Ie: if someone treacherously murders my brother and I being the most senior of kin to him, I was permitted by OT law to redeem or to avenge his death upon the murderer.

If people are financially strapped they could sell a piece of land they owned and when possible they could buy the land back, to redeem it, for the appropriate price plus 1/5th.

The OT also talked about people being able to redeem other people such as the elderly, orphans or a relative if they were in a bad way and you were next of kin or in the line of kinship. You also had to be a senior relative and able to protect and defend.

And such is the story of Ruth who married Boaz who redeemed her. Boaz was the ‘goel’ her kinsman redeemer.

Ruth had been married but her husband died, she returned with her mother-in-law, Naomi, to her ancestral land in Judah.

Ruth 1

Now Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, a man of standing from the clan of Elimelek, whose name was Boaz.

Ruth 2

And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.”

Naomi said to her, “Go ahead, my daughter.” 3 So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek.

Boaz noticed Ruth and was very kind to her then Naomi encouraged Ruth to dress up and wait until Boaz fall to asleep. Then uncover his feet and lie down at his feet.

Ruth 3 Boaz awakes

9 “Who are you?” he asked.

“I am your servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a kinsman-redeemer of our family.”

But Boaz wasn’t first in line to redeem Ruth so …

Ruth 4:1

Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the kinsman-redeemer he had mentioned came along. Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.”

-So he went over and sat down and they talk about Ruth

Ruth 4:6

At this, the kinsman-redeemer said, “Then I cannot redeem it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.

So Boaz redeems Ruth

-the word redeemer is used more of God than of people but the people like Boaz who redeem others is a reflection of the heart of God who redeems us.  YHWH GOAYLI.  (Go why ee lee^) God my Redeemer

-last week when we talked about God being our Rock, our Tzur I read

Psalm 19:14

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

In the Hebrew it reads YHWH TZUR GOAYLI (Go why ee lee^)

In English we would say God is my rock and my redeemer but the Hebrew is stated with expression  -God my ROCK  my REDEEMER

Do I need to be redeemed?

Yes, well what if I think I don’t need to be redeemed?

It doesn’t matter, truth is not subject to your thinking or acceptance. God is offering you redemption because GOD thinks you need to be redeemed.

Why do I need to be redeemed?

-because you’re in the back room at the Hellish Pawn Shop awaiting your final destination. Your sin, all your failures to live up to God’s standard has put you there -you have no money or ticket to get you out and no means to be set free

How do I go about being redeemed?

If you want to be redeemed you need a redeemer, someone who will pay your price on your behalf and the price is pretty high. You could never earn that price in fact you’re broke spiritually.

-the redeemer of your soul is Christ the Saviour who paid your debt by dying in your place on the cross

Therefore take, believe in, trust in and rely upon Christ, do it in faith

When can I be redeemed?    Now,

Where can I be redeemed?   here, right where you sit, turn to Christ

For those of you who have experienced this redemption rejoice more loudly, more deeply, more expressively that I am redeemed

YHWH GOAYLI  (Go why ee lee^)

Isaiah 44:24

“This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the Lord, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself

Isaiah 48:17

This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.

Isaiah 44: 22-24

22 I have swept away your offenses like a cloud,     your sins like the morning mist. Return to me,     for I have redeemed you.”

23 Sing for joy, you heavens, for the Lord has done this;     shout aloud, you earth beneath. Burst into song, you mountains,     you forests and all your trees,

for the Lord has redeemed …

Job 19:25

I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.

Redemption always involves rescue.

Redemption always involves ransom.

Redemption always involves restoration.

Redemption leads us to Christ.

Maureen Dowd wrote about President Obama's difficulties in living up to the expectations surrounding his election in 2008. She writes: "He came as a redeemer and then didn't redeem."

-not God, He is the Redeemer, your redeemer, your only redeemer

        God will not fail

"Redemption is the deliverance of the people of God from the bondage of sin by the perfect substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus Christ and their consequent restoration to God and his heavenly kingdom."

1 Cor. 6:19b -20 You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price.

Isaiah 54:5

For your Maker is your husband— the Lord Almighty is his name— the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.

-before the earth and the heavens were created God knew you, God loved you and God knew that man would sin, that they loose their spot in heaven in God’s family. BUT GOD, BUT GOD -planned redemption, God determined to buy you back, to redeem you, through the redeemer Christ, the greatest of prices ever paid -for you.

Isaiah 63:16

… you, Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.
