More About Jesus # 17 Jesus MY High Priest
STATION 1 Aaron:
Good morning. My name is Aaron, yes that’s right, Aaron -Moses’ older brother and Miriam’s brother too. I was a ‘prophet’ appointed by God because my brother didn’t speak well. Moses and I went to Pharoah and I was the one that spoke those famous words ‘let My people go’. I didn’t say it in English I said it in Hebrew -Shal-lach Et-ami.
-the reason I’m with you today is to give you some background into what my main job was when the Israelites came out of Egypt. I was the High Priest appointed by God, commissioned by Moses and assigned specific ‘religious’ duties to perform and complete. My great grandfather was Jacob, my grandfather was Levi and our whole tribe of Levi were divinely selected to function as priests with 1 high priest, and I was appointed the first High priest at Mount Sinai.
-you can read all about what I was to wear, do and be in Exodus 28 & on.
-my basic duties included offering sacrifices for the people & act as a mediator between the people and God because of this ‘sin’ problem. I was the only 1 allowed to go in before God past a thick veil into the Holy of Holies and could only do so with blood and only once per year, but every year. I could only sacrifice after properly washing myself.
My function as High Priest, the sacrifices, the washing, the offering of blood, the access to God -all this would be concluded by the ‘great prophet’ to come that my brother, Moses, foretold would come.
(I found out later -it was Jesus).
STATION 2 Author of Hebrews:
Good morning. My name is a mystery -oh, I know who I am but my name is not known by most. I wrote the book of Hebrews in the New Testament and people keep on speculating who I am. I won’t say my name because that’s God’s design for now but I am Jewish. Real Jewish as I wrote so much about Jewish laws, about priests, high priests, sacrifices and blood that I connected the dots between Aaron, the first High Priest, and Jesus, the final High Priest. All the functions, duties and procedures of a high priest as begun with Aaron were a foretelling of the ultimate High Priest Jesus who completed them.
-some 30 years after Jesus died and rose again I wrote this book under the inspiration of God Himself and each word is true and reliable. Soon after writing this the Temple was destroyed, Timothy was imprisoned and life changed drastically. But these truths I wrote are forever true.
-Jesus is our High Priest now, for I wrote in Hebrews 2:17
Jesus is our merciful and faithful high priest …, so that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
-In Hebrews 3:1 …fix your thoughts on Jesus, … our high priest.
-In Hebrews 4:14 … we have a great high priest … Jesus the Son of God,
-In Hebrews 6:20 Jesus, has entered (the presence of God -the Holy of Holies) on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever,
Here are a few more thoughts I wrote on Jesus, our High Priest …
Hebrews 7:27 Unlike the other high priests, Jesus does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. Jesus sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. (Calvary)
Hebrews 9:7 & 12
-… the high priest entered the Holy of Holies, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed ... -But Jesus did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.
My brother Peter wrote in 1 Peter 1:19
You were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. -the High Priest, Jesus, offered Himself!!
And my brother John wrote Revelation 1:5
…To him, Jesus, who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,
Let me condense Jesus’s work as High Priest: from (Hebrews 10:19-22)
… brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
Station 3 Malchus:
Malchus was a servant, he was not the high priest but He worked for the high priest, Caiaphas, at the time of Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion. He was the one in the garden when they arrested Jesus whom Peter cut his ear off trying to defend Jesus.
I caught up to Malchus and asked him about what happened.
How might the encounter between Malchus and Jesus be understood and applied? In an ironic way, Malchus was the servant who was in the presence of two high priests. Yes, he worked for Caiaphas the Jewish High Priest. It was under his orders that Malchus was in the Garden in the first place. However, it was the Great High Priest, Jesus, who would change Malchus forever. The writer of Hebrews names Jesus as the Great High Priest in Hebrews 4:14-16 with these words:
“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in
time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16!
!
The true and great high priest, Jesus, would be sent to his death in part by a sort of false high priest in Caiaphas. And before the servant of the false high priest, Malchus, would be allowed to help arrest
and lead the true and great high priest away, Jesus, the great high priest, would heal the ear of this servant named Malchus. This demonstration of grace, mercy and love would be continuing in public
what he had already demonstrated in private by washing the feet of his followers in John 13 at the Passover meal. It was at the Last Supper he chose to demonstrate servanthood and an emptying of himself on behalf of his friends. It was in the Garden of Gethsemane that he would serve the servant who was bleeding and in pain with a touch unlike any he had ever known from a master.
As Frank S. Mead says of the encounter between Malchus and Christ, “You came to see them strike him down; he turned to stop your pain.” Malchus was one of many men who came looking for someone in the dark. All the men of his search party were sinful, violent, armed men who were searching; little did they know they were searching for God. In fact, all human beings are doing just what that band of men was doing that night whether people realize it or not. All humans are looking
for God. May God allow a close encounter with Christ that stops our pain and heals us from the inside out.
Station 4 George:
Hello, my name is George. I follow Jesus, I am a Christian. Jesus is many things to me and one of them is -He is my personal High Priest. He has brought me into the very Holy of Holy presence of God through His blood, a permanent and final sacrifice and secured for me eternal life.
-I had a debt I could not pay except with my own life, He paid a debt He did not owe but He paid my debt with His life. What a sacrifice!!
-He organized, arranged and completed all this as my High Priest and Jesus executed this using Himself as the sacrifice. What a High Priest is mine!!
The most beautiful act of love, that pure, pure love, ever shown to me was from Jesus. And He was just dying to show me, oh how much he loved me, it was so strong and deep, His love of me, that it broke His heart and eventually it killed Him.
Something that had never happened before was that Jesus that great High Priest who usually offered a sacrifice for others in the form of a lamb, would not offer a lamb but offer Himself as a sacrifice for me. He loved me so much that He took my punishment for my sin, which I truly deserved, and He bore my penalty. Jesus, My High Priest was also my sacrificial lamb. Unbelievable but true.
You can know all the theology you want but it won’t help you if you don’t have faith. You can mentally say Jesus sacrificed Himself for me, He is my High Priest and it won’t move you. But if you truly believe what Jesus did for you, if you put your faith in Him as your sacrifice and your High Priest who opened up the Holy Place, God’s Presence, than you’ll be moved. Faith will make your eyes widen in awe, your heart rejoice and maybe skip a beat. Faith gives you a glimpse of the divine and that is so awesome.
Wait a minute, mister. This story of Jesus and you is too good to be true. I have a problem with it in fact I have a bunch of problems with this story.
1st I’m not that bad that the punishment must be death!
2nd I do some good things too and they outweigh the ‘bad’!
3rd Who made God the judge and jury?
4th In fact, how do you know that this God really He loves you?
5th I find it hard to believe this story you’re telling me.
I’ll answer those objections but first let me make a statement, then explain the statement and then answer the objections.
(statement)
Righteousness and justice mixed with compassion, mercy and boundless love solved my problem, the problem I could never fix.
(Statement explanation)
Righteousness (God is perfectly righteous) and justice (God will not tolerate and sin/evil or wrong without punishing it) mixed with compassion (God understands us and has empathy towards our weakness), mercy (God wants to help us) and boundless love (Our Creator made us and loves us deeply) solved my problem, the problem I could never fix. (God saw our problem with sin, sent His Son to take our punishment -God served out justice upon Jesus for us [Jesus agreed to do this] and fixed our problem. This is our great High Priest, Jesus, who did this.
God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
(To answer those objections now)
1st I’m not that bad that the punishment must be death!
It only took Adam and Eve 1 sin to experience spiritual death.
Have you sinned once?
2nd I do some good things too and they outweigh the ‘bad’!
It doesn’t work like that, it’s not a scale. Have you sinned once
3rd Who made God the judge and jury?
God, the creator, the life giver, the One who loves you and has done everything He can to give you life. He judges justly and perfectly.
4th In fact, how do you know that this God really He loves you?
He proved His love for you and me on a wooden cross.
5th I find it hard to believe this story you’re telling me.
ME TOO. IT IS THE MOST FANTASTIC LOVE STORY I HAVE EVER HEARD AND IT’S TRUE BECAUSE I HAVE EXPERIENCED IT THROUGH FAITH.-it’s moved my soul, it’s widened my eyes and it has made my heart glad.
Believe this story in your heart, have faith in this Jesus and be moved over and over and over again.
