More about Jesus #15
Jesus the Prophet Part 1
Have you ever received a telephone call after midnight? A surprise call like that is a jolt to your system when the phone rings past midnight. Immediately, your mind floods with negatives, whose calling, what’s happened, did someone die or is being taken to the hospital? What’s wrong, surges through your emotions like waves in a sea storm.? One question after another explodes until you find out.
Listening to the prophets speak, back in the old days, or even reading them now, today, is often a shock to the system, they’re like a phone call after midnight. Shocking, sometimes hard to understand, often blunt and frequently offensive to receive. Because what they say is true. If a prophet ever spoke an untrue word he was to be put to death. That kind of high standard of truth saying thinned out the ranks to authentic truth saying prophets like Isaiah, Daniel, Moses and yes, Jesus. Jesus was the ultimate and final prophet, He was THE PROPHET, and, we know, that Jesus was more than just a prophet.
Jesus fulfilled 3 distinctive functions or positions when He came as Emmanuel to earth. They are: He was a prophet, a priest and a King. Each office or function fulfilled by Jesus would be the pinnacle of each position.
*As prophet, Jesus would be the ultimate Great Prophet -God Himself would speak for Himself and through Himself as Jesus.
*As Priest, Jesus would be the supreme and greatest Priest of all ages and be the priest presenting the greatest sacrifice ever made, Himself. *As King, Jesus would be the royal heavenly regal, the final and only King of Kings.
Jesus was TheProphet, what Jesus said was and is ‘Godly’ true -both His forthtelling of truth and His foretelling of the future truth.
-most of Jesus’s words where forthtelling of truth, such as I am the Way, God loves the world, I am God’s Son -these are statements or forthtelling of eternal truths.
-but Jesus also foretold, that is predicting future events such as His own death & resurrection, which were true, He predicted/He foretold the destruction of the temple building, which occurred in 70 AD and He prophetically announced His visible return to earth for all to see.
In Matthew 24 we read when the disciples asked Him about His return:
30…then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
-everybody sees, the great trumpet sounds His return
-please note that in this prophetic foretelling of Jesus that the ‘elect’ (His chosen followers) are already in Heaven –‘from one end of Heaven to the other end.’
In this -His prophecy, Jesus is coming in ‘power and great Glory,
Jesus was TheProphet, what Jesus said was and is ‘Godly’ true -both His forthtelling of truth and His foretelling of the future truth.
-Therefore, we need to listen to Jesus and be shocked, awakened as it were to the truth He spoke. We need to pick up the phone after midnight, as it were, and hear Prophet Jesus. Read His words to you.
*Throughout the history of Israel, God raised prophets to speak His word in times of darkness, rebellion, and confusion. They were chosen to carry divine messages—often unpopular ones—calling people back to covenant faithfulness. From Moses to Elijah, from Isaiah to Malachi, the prophets stood as God’s mouthpieces, declaring, “Thus saitheth the Lord.”
They mainly forthtold of God’s truth
Such as Moses with the 10 commandments (God’s Rules), or as David spoke of God our Shepherd, or Isaiah spoke of Israel worshipping with their mouths but not their hearts 🡪 these are statements of current truths not future predictions.
But these same prophets also ‘foretold’ of future events. Such as Isaiah foretelling of the Messiah’s virgin birth of the Saviour’s suffering or like Moses who foretold of a coming Prophet in Deuteronomy that we all should listen to. That’s Jesus.
*Then, after centuries of silence, when prophecy had ceased, 400 years of prophetic void and muteness from God, where the heavens seemed closed, a voice arose in the Israeli wilderness: John the Baptist, preparing the way for One greater than himself. That One was Jesus of Nazareth, that greatest Prophet of all. The people who actually heard Jesus speak said, “A great prophet has arisen among us” (Luke 7:16).
*They were right—but their understanding was partial. They saw His miracles, heard His teaching, and sensed divine power, but few grasped that this Prophet was the very Son of God, not merely a messenger, but the Message Himself.
Prophet Jesus wasn’t just a messenger but the Message Himself.
*When Jesus came, many recognized Him in this prophetic role. After He miraculously fed the multitude, the crowd exclaimed:
Jn 6:14 “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world”
*BUT Jesus was more than a prophet - He was THE Prophet of all prophets, the ultimate and final Word from God. God came and spoke directly to us, that is; Jesus came and spoke directly to us, THE definitive PROPHET of all ages. Prophets of old would speak “Thus saith the Lord” but this great prophet, Jesus Christ, would say: truly, truly I say unto you (that is I AM says)
Hebrews 1:1-2 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son,
Therefore, we need to pick up the phone, we need to listen to Jesus and be awakened and shocked to the truth Jesus spoke directly to us. And He, Prophet Jesus, the God who speaks, speaks directly to YOU even today. So, listen, listen carefully to this Emmanuel, this Jesus.
It’s after midnight and the phone is ringing, we are dazed at the hour of this unexpected call. Call display shows us it’s Prophet Jesus calling. Our thoughts are racing -Who is this man, this prophet? This Jesus from Nazareth? What is His identity, what is He going to tell me, what’s His message, how is His message going to affect my Life.
I answer the call with helloooooooooo? Who is it?
—it’s Prophet Jesus, I AM the One who reveals God perfectly,
Colossians 1:15 The Son (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God,
An Aside:
There is but one God, He is to be known as Yahweh, Mono-theistic.
That is His BEING. He is one being, He is God.
But the one God has chosen to reveal Himself in three persons and God choose to reveal Himself in flesh to us. God choose to do this. Jesus, is Emmanuel, God with us.
-it is not for us to comprehend all the ways God works, or to grasp and figure out God. His ways are higher, His thoughts are greater than ours and if we could figure God out completely, I dare say He wouldn’t be God anymore.
-so, Jesus is the image of God revealed in flesh and we have the very words God spoke, the very words Prophet Jesus forthtold, here on earth.
SOOO, pick up the phone, read His Word (Bible), read -Hear and believe the powerful God truths the God/Prophet, Jesus, spoke,
John writes that Jesus bore witness to the truth, that is -He spoke God truth, Jesus was the truth and Jesus spoke on the authority of God Himself
-the other prophets would say “thus saith the Lord” but when Prophet Jesus spoke it was like He was saying “I the Lord say” Truly Truly I say
-people could tell the difference for when He gave His sermon on the mount in Matthew 7 we read: … that When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
Several weeks ago when I spoke on Jesus the Teacher I challenged you by saying this:
‘start reading His words -start reading in Matthew 5 and read a chapter every day -open up, ask Jesus -teach me, show me. If He is silent, keep asking, ask earnestly, humble yourself and submit to His teaching.
(example)some of you are carrying burdens you can’t bear, some of you carry weight on your shoulders too heavy a load and some here bear agonizing problems🡪 the Teacher wants to teach you something.’
Well, today I will say DITTO. The Greatest Prophet, the great I AM, is speaking to you, PICK UP THE PHONE, read His words for yourself, Hear Him speak to you and believe it all, no matter how hard it may seem.
His words will help you, guide you, chasten you, comfort you, instruct you, for Jesus’ words are life, & water & food & power in your soul.
-When I read the very words Jesus spoke, my heart burns within me, my soul leaps for joy, I see and understand more clearly. David wrote that God’s words were sweet and like honey to his mouth.
I pick up the phone - helloooooooooo? Who is it?
--it’s Prophet Jesus telling me of the future
Jesus’s greatest prophetic utterance of a future event was His statement of truth that He would rise again from the dead. He did it!
Well, what other great things did Jesus predict that would happen in the future?
🡪in the future He would never leave His followers, always there
He’s never left you, believer - He’s never left you!! Prophetic
I pick up the phone - helloooooooooo? Who is it?
--It’s prophet Jesus calling humanity & YOU to repentance.
-Prophet Jesus, Son of God Jesus, the equal who was with God and who was God -this Jesus, His prophetic message was called ‘Good news’ which started with God, the I AM God, who loved us/you, and came to us and spoke directly to us in Jesus. His message was simply -you have a sin problem, I will take care of your sin problem by taking your punishment upon myself, but you need to repent (turn from your sinful ways) and believe in me as YOUR Saviour.
-this is God’s message, spoken through God Prophet Jesus -I am your Saviour, the only Saviour, believe in me, I love you, come home., have eternal life -a life forever with the God who loves you.
I pick up the phone - helloooooooooo? Who is it?
--its Prophet Jesus Revealing God
In John 1:18, we read:
“No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made Him known.”
This means that Jesus didn’t merely bring a message from God—He was the message of God.Every word He spoke, every act of compassion, every rebuke, every miracle—was the living Word revealing the heart of the Father.
When Jesus healed the sick, He revealed that God is compassionate. When He forgave sinners, He showed that God is merciful. When He wept over Jerusalem, He unveiled God’s longing for His people’s repentance. When He died on the cross, He embodied the ultimate prophecy—God’s love poured out for a broken world.
