MORE ABOUT JESUS #13
Jesus The Teacher
Let me summarize the 1st 12 messages on ‘More about Jesus’ in one long sentence.
Jesus came to earth, Emmanuel -God Himself came, for you, to save you from your sins, to redeem or buy you back from the prison of your sin’s punishment, -this Holy One, this high King of heaven, this humble God in compassion and mercy came to earth because He made you, He sees you, He loves you and wants you to be with Him forever, you are His joy and delight.
Have you experienced this? This is the most fantastic goodnews ever told. It’s all about Jesus and isn’t Jesus astonishing? I suggest you get to know Him more and more because He is your only hope.
Jesus is our only hope because our sin is blacker than we think, our situation more desperate than we know and our hopelessness without Jesus much bleaker than we ever imagined.
Jesus, you see, is our remedy for our black sin, Jesus is our way through every situation and dark valley, and Jesus is the grandest and the surest of hope in this dark peaceless world.
Today is More about Jesus #13, *Jesus the Teacher. The greatest master teacher that ever lived. HE HAS ARRIVED & HAS TAUGHT.
The 4 Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke & John, talk about Jesus as a Teacher and even refer to Him in name, as The teacher.
At the last supper with His disciples Jesus acknowledges that the disciples who walked with Him for 3 years call Him ‘Teacher’ and then Jesus tells them ‘you’re right -I am ‘Teacher’.
John 13:13–14 — “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. … I am, your Lord and Teacher, “
Jesus often took these same disciples during those 3 years on the dusty roads of Israel, He took them apart from the crowds and directly taught them -the Master Teacher taught His student-disciples.
Matthew 5:1–2 — “Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.”
This was the Sermon on the Mount teaching and the initial and intended audience was Jesus's disciples, who followed him up the mountain to listen more closely, the crowd overheard His teaching.
Jesus often tried to be recluse with His disciples so He could Teach them.
Mark 9:30–31 — “They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, because he was teaching his disciples.”
Know this with certainty, YOU, as Jesus’s disciple, dear Christian, Jesus wants to teach you, you can hear His direct teaching in the 4 Gospels in the very words He spoke. Never forget that Jesus is speaking to you.
The lesson is this: Listen to your Teacher,
(read His words, ponder them deeply, listen in your soul to the Master)
Believe what the Teacher says,
(every word He speaks is true, absolute truth, trust/believe Jesus)
Obey everything the Teacher says.
(omit nothing, obey all, you are His disciple if you obey your Teacher)
Jesus, the Teacher of all time taught on hillsides, from a boat, at synagogues, in Capernaum and in Jerusalem at the Temple. He taught all over Israel including on a roadside, on the Road to Emmaus where we read in Luke 24 that Jesus, after His resurrection, walked and talked with 2 of His disciples on that road 7 miles outside of Jerusalem. And the reaction to the Teacher on the disciples was fire -they said ‘didn’t our hearts burn within us’ as He spoke to them/as He taught them.
-have you ever felt this fire inside as you listened, as you heard, as you felt God sear your heart with truth, burning truth applying directly to you and your situation? Oh yes!
These 2 disciple’s reactions to Jesus’ teaching was not uncommon, it was typical. In Mark 1:21 people were ‘amazed’ at His teaching, In John 7:46 the people said ‘no one has ever spoke the way this man does’, (wouldn’t you have loved to hear Jesus speak personally? I guess we should listen now to the words of this unparalleled teacher too). In Luke 19:47 the people ‘hung on His words’, and in Mark 12:37 the ‘people listened with delight’.
What a speaker, what a teacher, absolute truth being conveyed by the Teacher who is also called the TRUTH. And life lessons, real Godly life lessons being taught by the one who was called the LIFE.
I say again:
Know this with certainty, YOU, as His disciple, brother and sister in Christ, Jesus wants to teach you, and you can hear His direct teaching in the 4 Gospels in the very words He spoke. Never forget that Jesus is speaking to you.
So:Listen to your Teacher,
(read His words, ponder them deeply, listen in your soul to the Master)
Believe what the Teacher says,
(every word He speaks is true, absolute truth, so trust/believe Jesus)
Obey everything the Teacher says.
(omit nothing, obey all, you are His disciple if you obey your Teacher)
Jesus said, Jesus taught:
John 8:31 -If you hold(obey) to my teaching, you are really my disciples
Listen, Believe and obey your teacher.
In Matthew 7:28 we read — “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
But in John 6 there’s a different reaction to His teaching for we read in vs 60 “On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
-How did Jesus react to this unbelief (that’s what it was according to Jesus)? The Teacher said “The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.”
-John in his gospel records that many followers of Jesus, left Him because part of the things He taught didn’t sit well with some, some of the things Jesus said got stuck in people’s craw, it wasn’t palatable or digestible. To others they just disagreed with Jesus because their thinking was ‘more right’ than His.
But Jesus never wavered His thinking, He never changed His mind, He never accommodated any ‘part-truth’ or mistruth. What did God think was the criterial base to His teaching not what did man think. This applies to us. Thus, we need to shape and to conform our hearts and minds to Jesus’s teaching. PERIOD.
I will say it again:
Know this with certainty, YOU, as Jesus’s disciple, Jesus wants to teach you even the hard things, the things that grate and upset you, and you can hear His direct teaching in the very words He spoke. Never forget that Jesus is speaking to you.
So:Listen to your Teacher,
(read His words even the hard ones, ponder them deeply, listen in your soul to the Master)
Believe what the Teacher says,
(every word He speaks is true even the hard ones, it is absolute truth, so trust/believe Jesus, seek to understand all His words)
Obey everything the Teacher says.
(omit nothing, obey all, even the hard things, for you are His disciple if you obey your Teacher)
John 8:31–32 — “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
I say, Jesus spoke some hard things for us hear, hard for us to accept & believe and certainly hard things for us to obey.
-isn’t it true that we love to hear of God’s beautiful and deep love for us and we love to hear of His wonderful grace and His tender mercy and His total forgiveness. And heaven really sounds great too, but Jesus also said there’s a cross for us to pick up and bear.
🡪 as Jesus carried a wooden cross on the Via Delarosa, the way of the cross, some 2000 years ago He tells us, He teaches us, that we are to lift our cross and follow Him. This is not a rosy road prospect for sure, but it is a sign that we are His disciples and hence all the promises are ours along with the land of unfading roses -Heaven.
Jesus, our teacher is very clear, He said in Matthew 16:24;
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
-This is difficult for us, perhaps hard of all things to hear, harder yet to believe and finally, hardest to obey. BUT pick it up, pick up your cross-whatever it is -pick it up -stand up now and follow Him. This is what Jesus teaches you. You’ve heard Jesus say this now -do you believe that Jesus wants you to pick up your cross and follow Him???? Obey your teacher He knows what is best for you, what is right for you.
Listen to Jesus -oh what pain we bear because we don’t listen to Him, it’s human to turn our ears away from the Master and not hear Him, we sometimes only hear what we are comfortable with, what we like. But we must listen to all He says.
Applicationstart reading His words -start reading in Mathew 5 and read a chapter every day -open up, ask Jesus teach me, show me. If He is silent, keep asking, ask earnestly, humble yourself and submit to His teaching.
(example)some of you are carrying burdens you can’t bear, some of you carry weight on your shoulders too heavy a load and some here bear agonizing burdens🡪 the Teacher wants to teach you something
Matthew 11:28–30 — “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest… Take my yoke (Listen, believe and obey) upon you and learn from me (Learn -the Teacher is speaking to you.), for I am gentle and humble in heart.”
-your every burden He can help,
-your every load He can bear,
-your every problem, every fear, every worry, every situation He can help, He can give you rest.
This is your Teacher speaking to you.
You have Listened; now do you believe what Jesus said is true?
Believe what Jesus said is true.
-Many people would profess they believe but they don’t possess this belief.
-if you say I believe than ‘own it’, possess it, cling to it, believe it in the deepest and darkest corners of your heart. When you don’t understand -still believe Jesus and wait for Him to give you peace
When your trouble makes no sense, no way out is the sign ahead -go to Jesus -give it to Him -believe in His words to you with all your heart (even say it out loud to God -I BELIEVE) - wait for Him & His peace.
There’s still a hole in the heart of many Christians,
There’s a whole lot of empty going on.
There’s a whole lot of tears, a whole lot of fears,
Somewhere along the way we’ve lost our way.
Somewhere we stopped listening, stopped hearing Jesus speak
Somewhere we stopped believing -His words are really true.
Somewhere we stopped obeying -OBEYING ALL HIS WORDS.
There’s a hole in the heart of many Christians that only Jesus can fill.
Obey Jesus Words.
Learning about The Teacher, Jesus, is good, but learning about this grandest of all Teachers and not doing, not obeying, what Jesus taught us is evidence that we really haven’t listened and believed.
What did Jesus teach? Here are 10 teachings, 10 commands that we are to Listen to, Believe in and obey completely: This is the Jesus way:
What a delight to be His sheep, to follow the Good Shepherd, to hear His voice, to believe His words and to obey Him for His burden is light.
More, more about Jesus-David wrote about the Teacher
In Psalm 25:4-5
Show me your ways, Lord (that’s Jesus), teach me your paths.Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior…
