Today we are finishing our 4 part series entitled Power Words of Jesus with this simple statement “… with God all things are possible”. The verse is found in Matthew 19:26 “With man this is impossible, with God all things are possible“
The question begs to be asked what is impossible for man? Let’s read the context of this Jesus statement
16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
18 “Which ones?” he inquired.
Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother, and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.”
20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”
21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”
26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Q What is impossible for man? In this context someone who is trusting in his riches rather than the Lord to save him. à that’s impossible
And we know from scripture that ‘trusting in riches’ isn’t the only thing that is impossible for salvation. Such as having no faith.
Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)
6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Such as earning our way into heaven with good works or good deeds.
Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
There are things that are impossible and then there are things that are only God possible.
There are things that are Impossible for some people
There are things that are Impossible yesterday but not today
There are a whole lot of things which yesterday seemed impossible, but which today are everyday, ordinary. A hundred years ago, who would have thought it would be possible to send pictures through space? Who would have imagined that somebody standing in front of a camera in Peterborough could be seen by people in Toronto? Or flying in an airplane, 7 or 8 miles up or taking a submarine, a boat that goes under the water instead of on top. Impossible?! No, we know now it can be done but yesterday it was impossible.
There are things that are Impossible today but not tomorrow
Maybe some of the impossibilities will be possible, later on, at the right time. Maybe some of the things we hope for, like cures for cancer will really happen.
There are things that are Impossible for anybody –period.
Here are a few impossible things:
-draw a straight line with a compass
-fly without some mechanical device …………
Now some spiritual impossibilities
We mentioned several already such as buying or earning your way to heaven, to salvation. It’s impossible to be sinless, the Bible says ‘all have sinned’ and I from experience can vouch for that, and so can you.
Or to be a true Christian without faith and belief in Christ, His life, His death (a payment for your sin) and His resurrection proving He was truly God. Those are impossible.
With God all things are possible
We have a ‘Only God possible’ thing before our very eyes. This is our second Sunday here at this facility, a ready-made church building. We couldn’t afford this building right now, we didn’t earn it. This building was given to us, With God all things are possible, and I truly believe God did it, God did it for us, God did it for us to reach out to others.
With God all things are possible
Do you believe God can do for you what you cannot do for yourself? Such as deal with an addiction or a weakness or direct your next step or give you peace in a storm or give you grace to endure a trial.
Do you believe God can do to you what you cannot do yourself? Like supply this church building to Riverside or supply a need that you have or help you to change.
Do you believe God can do for you what you cannot do for yourself?
Like give you eternal life, life after death, heaven, a relationship with God right now.
I want you to understand that what Jesus said “…With man this is impossible, with God all things are possible “ that itis powerful and inspiring.
You see when we look at ourselves we often see our failures and our regrets, our if only regrets. “…With man this is impossible, with God all things are possible “
Let’s trade your if only regrets for God’s what if possibilities. The God possibilities in you. Think of it and ask what is my what if God possibilities in me?
“If God be for us who can be against us”
“We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us”
“With God all things are possible”. So what is your 1 God possibility idea, your
1 God possibility dream, your 1 God ordained possibility passion. You see God is ordering a way for you to go, God has prepared good works for you to do and
God started a good work in you and He will finish it.
God created you, has gifted you and calls you to God possibilities in you and through you.
Some of you have a God passion possibility in worship, embrace it, follow hard after God in this. God will bear fruit through you in this and that’s impossible for man but possible with God.
Some of you have a God passion possibility in being an encourager, or in working with your hands in serving others, or a God passion possibility in teaching, in the Bible or in outreach.
All I can say is, make sure it is a God possible thing from God, then embrace it then go for it with all your heart and strength.
God will bear fruit through you to His glory.
“…With man this is impossible, with God all things are possible “
